Custom Short Sleeve Argyle Polo Shirt
Short-sleeve knit polo with intarsia argyle panels and a striped woven shirt collar — the summer counterpart to our argyle sweater.
A short-sleeve knit polo with intarsia argyle panels and a striped woven shirt collar — the light, warm-weather counterpart to the long-sleeve argyle sweater we knit on the next page. The diamonds run as two narrow vertical columns down the front panels rather than as a full chest band, and each diamond is knitted as its own yarn section, so the diagonal edges stay sharp and the motif is in the structure of the fabric rather than printed or embroidered on top of it. Body is a marled jersey knit at 12 gauge, roughly 260-320 g per piece in cotton, cotton-acrylic or a merino blend, finished with a ribbed hem and ribbed short-sleeve cuffs. The collar is a striped woven shirt collar, cut and set rather than knitted, which is what gives this polo its crisp stand and its contrast line at the neck.
Three decisions carry the cost on this style, and all three are settled at sampling. First the collar: a woven shirt collar reads sharper and more 'polo shirt', a knitted collar reads softer and more 'knitwear', and the two are not interchangeable on the same placket because the neckline curve and the stand height are different constructions. Second the pattern route - intarsia for panels like these, where each diamond is a separate yarn section, or jacquard if the motif grows into a full-width band; intarsia gives the cleaner diagonal edge but limits how many colours can sit in one row before the floats at the back get heavy. Third the ground: a marled yarn hides slight stitch irregularity and photographs well, while a solid ground shows every tension variation, so a solid colourway needs a tighter yarn lot and a more careful gauge check on the first sample.
What goes wrong at bulk on argyle is nearly always the same two things. Argyle is a diagonal grid, so one needle out of place near the top of a panel reads as a broken diagonal two-thirds of the way down the body - we check diamond alignment at the machine as the panel comes off, not after linking. And the collar-placket junction is where a knit polo starts to look cheap: if the collar band and the placket are not set to the same length, the neckline ripples after the first wash. Both are checked on the PPS sample through a wash cycle before bulk is released. Typical buyers are resort and golf collections, school and club programmes, and private-label menswear brands that want an argyle story without a winter-weight sweater. Woven neck label, printed hangtag, size and care labels and a Pantone colour card all ship with the development. MOQ 100 pieces per design, sampling 72 hours from yarn stock confirmation, bulk production 2-3 weeks after PPS approval, DDP door-to-door.
