Custom Bitter-Gourd 3D Relief Knit Sweater
One crew-neck body carrying six stitch structures in a single tonal palette — the relief is knitted into the structure, not bonded onto it.
The bitter-gourd 3D relief sweater is the tonal counterpart to our heavier multi-texture retro builds: one crew-neck body carrying six different stitch structures, worked in a five- or six-colour palette that stays inside a single colour family instead of breaking into separate colour blocks. The relief is built on the needle bed through loop-transfer and hold-stitch sequences, so the pods, chevrons and raised bands are genuine structure — not bonded, printed or appliqued. On the body the sequence runs as vertical columns front and back; on the sleeves the same sequence is re-laid horizontally, which is why the sleeve reads as banding while the body reads as stripes. Every panel is knitted to shape and linked rather than cut and sewn, so the rib collar, cuffs and hem carry through without a seam line and the garment keeps its width through laundering.
Three decisions set the price before a single sample exists. Tier depth — how many loops are stacked before the relief is locked down — controls how high the texture stands; deeper tiers mean more transfers and more machine minutes, not a thicker yarn. Band width controls legibility: the same motif at six centimetres reads as architecture on a garment, at two centimetres it collapses into visual noise at this gauge. And palette contrast controls risk: a low-contrast tonal family such as this one absorbs minor float irregularities, while a high-contrast palette exposes every carry point, so the programme needs more tie-in stitches and more testing. Gauge runs 7GG to 12GG with a 420-560 g/pc hand-feel. Yarn options cover combed cotton for a dry matte surface, mercerised cotton for lustre, and merino or acrylic-wool blends for a softer premium hand.
What fails on this style is rarely the knitting and almost always the transition. Where a relief zone meets a flat zone on the same needle bed the two run at different tensions, and unless the transition stitch count is locked the panel drifts in width and the finished garment twists after washing — so every boundary is anchored and measured on the first panel before the run is released. The second failure is compression: weeks in a carton flattens the tiers, a buyer who steams or washes and flat-dries recovers them, and a tumble dryer can press them out permanently. We ship these flat-packed with tissue rather than vacuum-compressed for exactly that reason. Both faces are presentable, so the body needs no lining and turned cuffs stay clean on the inside.
Typical buyers are archive and retro streetwear labels, premium menswear brands building a textured knit capsule, and direct-to-consumer labels that need one hero piece for editorial photography. Custom woven neck labels, printed hangtags and a yarn colour card ship with every development so the palette can be signed off before bulk. MOQ 100 pieces per design, sampling 72 hours, bulk production 2-3 weeks, DDP worldwide.
