Custom Football Christmas Sweater

In the UK this is a football jumper; in the US it is a football sweater, and the build is the same either way. It is the all-over version: a field of small motifs — reindeer, snowflakes, fir trees, candy canes, a glass, a whistle — scattered on the ground at 5.5 cm, with the portrait or the club mark dropped into the centre of the chest and the name worked as a band underneath. That layout looks casual and is the least forgiving of the three Christmas builds, because every motif in the field is a yarn change and every yarn change leaves a float behind the panel. Get the size wrong and a 5 mm snowflake costs exactly as much to knit as a 22 mm one and reads as a smudge; get the field too dense and the reverse turns into a mat that hangs badly and itches through a shirt. We hold the motif field between 5 and 6 cm, weave the long floats in behind every fourth course, and keep the palette at six to eight yarns, which is where a scattered field still reads as a pattern rather than noise. The centre block takes a portrait, a crest or a garment graphic, and the name band runs on its own courses so a change of name never touches the artwork. Grounds are usually the club colour with a chalk motif field, or chalk with a colour field, and the second colourway is three yarn substitutions on the same chart rather than a new development. A banded-geometric version — chevron, zigzag and diamond rows with a centre mark — is the same programme with the field swapped for bands.
